I lived in Shanghai for 2 years, and I came away from the experience with a lot of realisations, the most important being that pedestrians always come second. Bike culture in China is brusque and unapologetic, but I was fascinated by it all: the way they transported stuff on bikes as if they were flatbed trucks, babies and children clinging to the backs of the bike drivers as if they were an afterthought, and the embellishments (umbrellas, loudspeakers, etc) that came with it.
